The Fishing Edge: Lake Calcasieu (Big Lake)
This Edge area is located almost entirely in Cameron Parish south of Lake Charles, Louisiana. It is part of the estuary of the Calcasieu River and is just north of the Gulf of Mexico. The French gave its name for the area called by the Choctaw Indians for a chief who lived in the area, “He who screams like an Eagle.” It is more commonly referred to as Big Lake has over one hundred thirty-five GPS Edge waypoints in this area.
Moss Lake, at 30ᴼ 07.6386’ N Latitude ~ 93ᴼ20.4277’ West longitude, offers very good Speckle trout fishing in the late fall.
It also has many positions that are around or in Turner Bay, in Mud Lake which is just north of Big Lake. It includes some of the oyster reefs and the small island by the three tanks. ~ Large fish are by the island more fish by the tanks. It has one of old pilings locations in the lake is indicated as well as the new Artificial Reefs in the southwest part of the lake.
There are locations along the Calcasieu Ship Channel where canals and natural cuts link the Waterway and the Lake and the jetties of the Channel at the Gulf of Mexico are shown. These listed locations are only some of many shown locations.
